Suportif – The Art and Science of Comfort

Suportif
Suportif covers cushion making technology including studies into foam and its constituent materials, layering know-how and seating comfort.

Padding (Main Cushion)
Custom FirmnessThe main support of a Massimmo sofa is provided by synthetic Polyurethane foams.  Polyurethane foams are produced in varying densities, in large slabs which are cut to suitable sizes and shapes during production.  At Massimmo, we offer 3 levels of firmness, namely Soft, Medium and Firm.

Polyurethane foams have an internal honeycomb structure of open-wall cells. They are generally well tolerated by the human body and do not cause any form of irritation to the skin.

Thanks to the slim, small, open-wall cell structure, they are particularly light and permeable to air. Massimmo selects and uses various types and densities of Polyurethane, which guarantee long-lasting lift and resilience. These carefully selected foam types allows for intense use yet maintains its original characteristics for years to come.

Elastic straps (Suspension)

The springiness and elasticity of the upholstered Massimmo sofa are important characteristics to guarantee adequate comfort based on the size and structure of the product. The combination between the various soft Polyurethane parts and the Elastic action of the straps gives the right degree of support and elasticity to the sofa.

Long gone are the classical springs of yesteryears, the Elastic straps have become an extremely important part of upholstered products in general. The seats of Massimmo upholstered sofas are fitted with exclusive 3 inch Elastic straps. In order to support the weight in the best and most uniform manner, the straps are criss-crossed, with a gap of 40 to 50 mm between them.

No particular care is required for the Elastic straps. Nevertheless, it is strongly advised not to jump on the central parts of the seat, particularly when the Cushions have been removed.e moved.

Wadding (Top Layer)
The topmost layer of Massimmo sofas are made softer with a fibrous Polyester material that is soft to the touch. This Wadding layer together with the main Padding is covered in white hi-porosity fabric.

Size, thickness and weight are chosen with great care, based on the area to be covered. Wadding is always wrapped with white hi-porosity fabric to ensure a durable compactness of the contours.

Besides the various types of cushioning, Wadding can be used for other parts of the sofa to give that extra touch of softness.

The waviness of the individual fibres, the so-called saw-tooth crimp, makes wadding a material that is able to provide excellent and durable supportive bulk. In critical areas, where softness is essential (top of the backrest, seats or armrests) wadding often helps to provide an extra layer of plushness.

The wadding used for upholstery does not need any particular care.

Cushions
When you sit on a Massimmo sofa the main support is provided by the Seat and Back padding. The Seat and Back padding is either loose as in the form of Seat and Back Cushions or integrated to the sofa body as seen in sofa Pappardelle and Linguine.

Massimmo Seat Cushions are made with Polyurethane foam and fibrous polyester Wadding, and wrapped with white hi-porosity fabric. The Back Cushions can either be made the same way but with a softer Polyurethane Foam, or entirely from the fibrous Polyester material.

Stitches
While stitching is necessary it must not be obvious (except when deliberate as in Contrast stitching). Massimmo uses different types of thread according to the requirements of each type of seam.

In general, seams can be either external or internal. External seams can either be single-stitch or double-stitch. For zip fasteners and external Velcro fastenings, Massimmo uses threads which best matches the shade of the fabric.

The stitching itself is executed with utmost care to ensure a neat and quality finish so as to show the upholstery in its best light.

Outdoor Wicker
Massimmo uses Polystrand Wicker for its outdoor furniture. They are very flexible, highly resistant to tearing, UV rays, and therefore to changes in weather conditions; it is unbeatable in terms of quality. It is a synthetic material that appears in strips of varying widths, hand-woven by expert Javanese craftsmen.

This material is obtained by melting dyed polyethylene, and formed to wicker strips by means of a co-extrusion process. After obtaining these fine strips, the craftsmen hand weave them individually around an aluminium frame, which is entirely welded and applied with a high-quality powder coating in a matching colour.

Our new extra-fine 4-mm fibre and core fibre have been specially developed so that table-top stability is ideal, without the need for a glass surface over it. All this ensures the final woven product is light, durable and weatherproof.

Outdoor Cushions & Fabric
Massimmo uses Sunproof fabric for its outdoor cushions. Superior color pigments are added during the production of fade-resistant Sunproof fibre.

The final result is a yarn and fabric with color throughout that won't fade or wash away – even when exposed to the sun and rain. These weather resistant fabrics are then cut and sewn into seat and back cushions for Massimmo’s range of outdoor furniture.

ISOframe – Craft Work

ISO Frame
ISOframe has everything to do with frame technology, incorporating studies in ergonomics, structural integrity and seating posture comfort.

Wood (Indoor Sofa Internal Structure, Legs & Table Tops)
The timber used for the internal structures of Massimmo’s upholstered products is defined during the design stages and tested on prototypes to make sure that the aesthetics, mechanical performance and sturdiness comply with the aesthetic, quality and performance targets that have been set.

Solid timber is used for most of the structures in Massimmo´s upholstered products, either as a monoframe or an assembly of individual components. The parts that are mainly under stress are made from structural joints and additional metal fasteners with angular reinforcements.

The panels between the various parts of the main supporting structure are made from plywood. This adds to the overall rigidity of the sofa. The internal structure has a Warranty of 2 years.

These wood structures are particularly suitable for covering with layers of polyurethane foam having different densities and characteristics such as to optimise the comfort of the seats and at the same time obtain the required forms.

The Legs of some Massimmo sofas and armchairs such as Bucatini, Rigatoni and Maccheroni are made of solid wood, machined by automatic lathing, milling, planing and moulding.

Massimmo’s coffee table tops are made from plywood or MDF covered with veneers or laminates bonded by pressure pressing and may be bordered with wood trimmings.

Taking care of varnished wooden parts is easy. For almost all the finishes and varnishes in the range, it is sufficient to use a soft, slightly damp cloth to clean the product and then dry it with a soft dry cloth to avoid scratches or abrasions.

To avoid any damage to the wooden structure and legs avoid pushing and pulling the sofa on the floor. Always lift the entire sofa from the floor, whenever they need to be moved.

Metals (Indoor Sofa Internal Structure & Legs)
When a sofa design is slender and complex, as in sofa Sedanini, a metal internal structure will be used instead of a wooden one. As Massimmo ventures into new product forms, we may see even more of such applications.

Many of Massimmo’s sofa legs such as Penne, Tortellini, Pappardelle and Farfalle are made from stainless steel. They may come either in polished or satin finish.

The metal components used for the internal structure of an upholstered product do not need any particular care. To clean the Legs of sofas and Coffee Tables, wipe the surfaces gently with a slightly damped clean cloth. Avoid using abrasive sponges of brushes as they will cause scratches. A quality metal cleaner may be used to remove traces of oxidation and water marks.

Aluminium (Outdoor Furniture Internal Structure & Legs)
Its lightness, resistance to corrosion and low fusion point make it an ideal material for numerous applications. Although initially used in the aviation industry its use has now extended into a wide range of fields, in particular outdoor furniture because it is a light but resistant material. Due to its high oxidation heat it rapidly forms a fine superficial layer of impermeable and adherent aluminium oxide which stops the oxidation process, making it resistant to corrosion and durable.

Massimmo uses carefully selected aluminium alloy for its furniture. Through an extrusion process, different profiles are obtained: which are given a pre-treatment to protect them against corrosive attacks. The tubes are then bent and welded into frames. A high-quality powder coating is applied to colour the frames and protect the aluminium.

Powder coating offers several benefits compared to liquid paint: laboratory tests show that it is more resistant to scratching and has a greater external chemical resistance and overall resistance. With aluminium-sling furniture, the sling is applied after powder coating and the product is then assembled with the final finishing touches. For wicker weave furniture, the frame is constructed as above and powder coated to a colour similar as the weave.

Teak (Outdoor Furniture Table Top Surfaces, Armrest & Accents)
The specific characteristics of teak, “tectona grandis” ensure that the passage of time and weather conditions do not spoil it. It is coated with a natural oil/resin that comes to the surface and when oxidised by contact with the air produces grey tones that offer it a permanent protective film. Also teak wood repels small parasites because it is poisonous for them.

Massimmo uses carefully selected teak. Our teak wood comes from Indonesia and is approved by the main environmental associations, since we demand totally controlled felling and replanting of forests. Unlike other woods used for outdoors, teak does not alter over time because of its properties and its non-dilation and non-torsion indices, not exceeded by any other wood; in combination with aluminium it achieves a refreshed and lighter look.

For this collection, we have introduced a new line of dining tables and stools, with a modern design characterised by the use of larger pieces of teak. And the reason is that when the wood is lower quality, small pieces are glued together to form other larger ones. The use of large pieces of teak is a sign of quality that few manufacturers can boast of today.

Teak is a natural product and requires little maintenance. Over time, it acquires a silvery grey tone due to weathering. This process can be slowed down, but eventually all teak which is used outside will experience this natural aging process unless sanded and oiled periodically (see maintenance).
